Middlesbrough Under-23s thrashed Sunderland Under-23s 6-0 at the Academy of Light on Monday afternoon as midfielder Isaac Fletcher scored a hat-trick.

Isiah Cornet opened the scoring for Graeme Lee's side inside five minutes while striker Rumarn Burrell netted a brace for the visitors.

Sunderland, whose side included former Boro duo Stephen Wearne and Mitch Curry, headed into the contest full of confidence following a 4-0 win over North East neighbours Newcastle a fortnight ago.

After a draw with Newcastle and win over Stoke, Boro lost their first game league of the season against Leeds earlier this month.

Yet Monday’s win moved the Teessiders upto third in Premier League 2, Division 2, following a solid start to the campaign.

Boro will now face Burnley at Heritage Park on Friday before a trip to Norwich at the end of October.

The Teessiders will then face West Brom, Wolves and Reading in November.
