While it was pleasing and indeed a relief in some quarters to see Boro net three goals without their top goalscorer, a place on the bench at the national stadium is probably not befitting the on-loan Chelsea ace.

But, equally, Kike led the line expertly against Brentford and scored the crucial second goal that ensured Boro’s progression, so it would be harsh to drop the Spaniard for the final.

It means that Jelle Vossen, the scorer of the opening goal in the first leg, may be the one who makes way for Bamford, even if his partnership with Bamford is greater than Kike’s is with the England under-21 star.
