The pair arrived on loan from Sheffield United and St Etienne respectively, with both deals completed well before the 11pm deadline.

Yet EFL rules state that “all paperwork relating to a transfer must be submitted to and approved by the governing body by 12 noon on the day prior to the date of such match.”

There are no changes to this rule on deadline day, which means Moukoudi, 22, and Morrison, 26, will have to wait until next weekend to make their Boro debuts.

Both deals were announced after the midday cut-off point as the Teessiders completed their fourth and fifth signing of the mid-season window.

Moukoudi and Morrison could make their debuts when Boro travel to Brentford on Saturday, February 8.
