Everton winger Yannick Bolasie says he wanted to join Middlesbrough and is disappointed a deal didn’t materialise.

Boro were in talks with the Toffees regarding a loan move for the 31-year-old, yet the deal wasn’t completed in time.

Bolasie hasn’t played for Everton since 2018 and has been loaned out to Aston Villa, Anderlecht and Sporting Lisbon over the last two seasons.

The winger was keen to link up with former manager Neil Warnock after the pair worked together at Crystal Palace, yet a move broke down in the closing stages.

Despite appearing to be surplus to requirements at Everton, Bolasie said he’s now looking forward to Saturday’s Merseyside derby meeting with Liverpool at Goodison Park.

The winger tweeted: “Disappointed the deal couldn’t get done in time...signed & sent off, waited till 19.00 with real hope

“From my end I know I was willing to give up a lot...all I wanna do is say thank you to Neil Warnock (appreciate you so much) and wish Middlesbrough all the best this season

“But now my focus is back on Everton & continuing to work hard everyday like I have been & if I’m called upon I’ll be ready to do whatever is necessary

Boro will now turn their attention to the free agent market after failing to bring anyone in on deadline day.

The Teessiders made five signings during the transfer window, with Grant Hall, Marcus Bettinelli, Sam Morsy, Chuba Akpom and Patrick Roberts coming in.
