Alan Pardew is set to shuffle defence for Spurs v Newcastle United in Capital One Cup

Pardew will be without the suspended Daryl Janmaat on Wednesday night.

Janmaat picked up his fifth booking of the season in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

But United manager Pardew has Steven Taylor available again – the defender has served a one-game ban – and left-back Massadio Haidara is pushing for a recall on the club’s return to North London.

Taylor could return to the starting XI, while Paul Dummett is an option for the right-back berth.

Pardew feels Janmaat will be a “big miss”, but he’s confident the team can cope in his absence.

“He was terrific – and even at the end he’s trying to get in the box and make something happen.

“He’ll be a big miss, but we’ve got some good players to come in.”

Midfielder Vurnon Anita – who has rarely featured this season – is another contender to replace Dutch countryman Janmaat, while 20-year-old Remie Streete could also travel.

Streete was recalled from his loan at Port Vale last month after Taylor and captain Fabricio Coloccini suffered injuries.

But the centre-half, from South Shields, is still yet to make his senior debut.

Newcastle came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the Premier League in October thanks to goals from Sammy Ameobi and Ayoze Perez, who are both likely starters.

The victory came early in the club’s six-game league and cup winning streak.

And Pardew has admitted his team fell significantly short of the standards set during that sequence at the Emirates Stadium, where Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla both scored two goals.

Perez netted for United, who face derby rivals Sunderland at St James’s Park on Sunday.

“I’m not going to make excuses – the best team won – and we know that,” said Pardew,” who also has midfielder Moussa Sissoko back from a one-match suspension.

“We’re better than we showed, but even at 3-1 we were still pushing – the character of the team was not lost.

“Arsenal were just too much for us with their movement, passing and quality of their play

“There was a lesson we need to take out. That’s the levels we’ve played at, particularly (against Chelsea). We need to try to stay at those levels every game.”

l NEWCASTLE’s U18 have booked a fourth-round FA Youth Cup tie against North East rivals Middlesbrough.

Dave Watson’s side kicked off their their cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Millwall at the New Den, with Callum Roberts, Sean Longstaff and Ben Drennan were on target.
