That’s the verdict of caretaker head coach John Carver, who saw the winger score in an Under-21 game this week.

Carver was at Whitley Park to see Gutierrez – who was given the all-clear after treatment for testicular cancer late last year – score from 20 yards in a 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

“He’s still some way away – I would say at least two or three weeks,” said Carver.

“He’s had a serious illness and it does take time to recover. He’s going in the right direction.

“I watched the guys celebrate with him and it was great to see. “

Asked if the 31-year-old had a chance of playing a part between now and the end of the season, Carver added: “Why not.”

Meanwhile, Siem de Jong and Mehdi Abeid returned to training yesterday.

“There’s some good news on the injury front,” said Carver. “Mehdi Abeid trained with us for the first time today along with Siem de Jong.

“Mehdi is a lot further forward than Siem.”
