Newcastle looking for another three points at Tottenham Hotspur

Pardew’s side got off the mark in the Premier League at the eighth time of asking on Saturday.

But the victory wasn’t enough to lift the club out of the relegation zone.

And 18th-placed Newcastle now face tough league fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool – and a Capital One Cup tie away to holders Manchester City.

United beat Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane last season thanks to an early Loic Remy goal – and a stunning series of saves from Tim Krul. The goalkeeper made a league-record 14 saves during a brave rearguard action from Newcastle, who had to dig deep to defend their slender lead in north London.

United manager Pardew is looking for another gutsy performance – and another three-point haul.

“We’ve got a great home game coming up against Liverpool (on November 1), which I think is always a fantastic game,” said Pardew.

“We’ve had good results against them here, and we’ve got Spurs, where we won last year with a terrific performance, so we need to replicate that.”

Pardew admits Newcastle need more victories – and more convincing performances – before he can talk of a corner being turned this season.

“There’s no corner to be turned, really,” he said. “We need to win more games. We were never going to win pretty our first win, because it has been a long time coming.

“It was about grinding it out, really, and making sure we did the right things, which we did.

“Now, hopefully, we can just build on this, because it’s important that we take a step forward now, and not think that we’ve done the job and everything’s OK.

“We’re still really in a position in the league we shouldn’t be in.”

United are a point behind rivals Sunderland, beaten 8-0 at Southampton on Saturday.

Pardew hopes to have Cheik Tiote, Sammy Ameobi, Emmanuel Riviere and Mike Williamson available for the game.

Meanwhile, Tottenham, beaten 4-1 by league champions Manchester City at the weekend, are ninth in the division.

The club take on Greek side Asteras Tripolis in a Europa League group game at White Hart Lane on Thursday night.
