Newcastle United squad is strong enough

JOHN Carver feels Newcastle United’s squad is strong enough to last the distance this season – despite the one-way traffic out of the club in last month’s transfer window.

Newcastle did not sign a single player, while six players, including Davide Santon, were loaned out.

And Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, already on a season-long loan at AS Roma, joined the club on a permanent basis. But head coach Carver revealed ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League home game against Stoke City that he had not asked Lee Charnley, United’s managing director, for any reinforcements.

Asked if he had requested any more players, Carver said: “No, because I had a group of players there I knew we could work with and who could get us to the end of the season. That was very important. If we had been really short of players, then that might have been a different situation. We’ve lost a player (Santon) because we had too many players to fit into the team.

Carver also backed the decision to loan five players to Rangers.

On defender Remie Streete, 20, he said: “We really need to test him – he’s ready for that next level.”
