Newcastle’s Abeid is leaning from his mistakes

Abeid’s overhit backpass to Tim Krul contributed to Ashley Young’s late winning goal at St James’s Park last Wednesday.

It was a rare slip-up from the 22-year-old, who has looked assured since breaking into the first-team picture at Newcastle this season.

Speaking after the game, Magpies head coach John Carver said: “Young Mehdi Abeid’s learning the game, and he’s been taught a harsh lesson.”

Abeid, meanwhile, believes it is important not to dwell on mistakes, and now looks set for an extended run in the side, with Cheik Tiote expected to miss the rest of the season.

The Algerian spent last season on loan at Panathinaikos, and feels his experiences in Greece helped to prepare him for any difficult moments on Tyneside.

Abeid said: “It’s all about being aggressive, and concentrating on the game.

“Even if you make a mistake, you just have to come back fast in the game and do your job.

“I feel much better after my loan in Greece. I played many games, so I gained confidence in myself, got some experience and came back a different player.

“I feel more confident, and this is just the benefit of the work I’ve been doing for so long now, so overall I’m happy with what I’m doing this season.”

Last summer, Abeid’s future was unclear after his successful loan spell at Panathinaikos ended, and he did not make his Premier League debut until an extremely impressive display against Liverpool in November.

However, he saw his progress halted in mid-November when he broke his toe on international duty with Algeria.

He has returned over recent weeks, though, and always believed he had what it took to make it at Newcastle.

Abeid added: “I never lost the confidence I could play for Newcastle, but I didn’t know what was going to happen (last summer).

“I’m glad that I stayed and have played many games for Newcastle, because I like this club.

“I’m back and fully fit now after what was a long injury and a hard injury for me.

“Three months (out) was very long, but now I’m back and ready and fit to play games, so I’m just enjoying my time on the pitch.

“We are happy with John (Carver). We are working, we are doing our best for him.” and hopefully we will get better results in the future.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Under-21s take on Stoke City at St James’s Park in the Under-21 Premier League tonight. Kick-off is at 7pm
