Newcastle’s Carver: No, I am not a yes man!

Rangers manager Kenny McDowall this week claimed he’d been told he HAD to play five players loaned to the club by Newcastle.

Ibrox chief executive officer Derek Llambias later insisted the board had no influence on McDowall’s team selection.

But the loans – and McDowall’s claim – raised more questions over the influence of United owner Mike Ashley at Rangers, in which he has a 8.92 per cent stake.

Newly-appointed head coach Carver, however, said he had no concerns about boardroom influence – and suggested he “would not stand” for any meddling in team affairs ahead of tomorrow’s home Premier League game against Stoke City.

Asked if he was a “yes man”, Carver said: “I’m definitely not that kind of person.

“The conversations I’ve had with the club have been honest, frank and straight. Obviously, I’ve got to give my opinions about individuals.

“What I won’t have is anybody telling me, for example, what team to pick. I won’t stand for that.

“If that situation started to develop, then I would stop it straightaway.”

Carver, appointed as head coach until the end of the season, said he will do the job his way.

Asked about he would tackle any interference, he said: “I’d confront the situation and say ‘look, this isn’t right’.

“I’m quite happy to work under the parameters of being the head coach.

“But once we go into the realms of other people telling me which team to play, that’s not the realm of the head coach.

“In fairness, myself and Lee (Charnley, United’s managing director) have a good understanding on that.

“I can guarantee to people out there that I’m definitely not going to be a yes man.

“I’m going to be myself, I’m going to do it the way I want to do it. If I’m successful, then great.

“If I’m not, at least I can say at the end of the day that I did it my way and then I’ve got nobody else to blame.”
