Newcastle’s Perez in trip down White Hart memory Lane

Perez netted his fourth Premier League goal of the season in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The forward’s performance – and goal – was the only highlight for Newcastle’s 2,000 travelling fans, who will return to North London on Wednesday night for a Capital One Cup quarter-final against Tottenham.

The club will be backed by 4,200 supporters at White Hart Lane, where Perez scored his first United goal in English football in late October.

Newcastle won 2-1 that afternoon – Sammy Ameobi also netted as Alan Pardew’s side came from behind – and Perez is hopeful United can quickly recover from their mauling at Arsenal.

“Everything started there – I scored my first goal there – and we are going there to try to win the game,” Perez said

Perez scored against Arsenal with United trailing by three goals.

The 21-year-old, signed from Tenerife in the summer, netted with a diving header from a Jack Colback free-kick in the 63rd minute to give Newcastle a glimmer of hope.

“The game wasn’t good, but I’m happy with the goal, and hopefully I’ll score more in the future,” said the Spain Under-21 international.

Pardew felt Perez – who has also scored against West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool this season – ran himself into the ground at the Emirates Stadium.

“He was good – I thought he was our best player,” said Pardew.

“He was everywhere for us. I took him off at the end because he could hardly move.

“I was very pleased with him. He was probably the highlight of the day. Good potential.”

Perez’s willingness to work for his team has seen his fast-tracked, having been brought to St James’s Park as one for the future after a prolific season in Spain’s second division.

Asked about his work ethic, Perez said: “It’s the minimum I can do. I’m working hard for the football club.

“Then if if I can also score, it’s better.”
