Pardew adamant Newcastle Utd have enough goals in team

The transfer window closed last week without an additional forward arriving at St James’s Park.

And summer signing Siem de Jong, expected to be one of United’s biggest attacking threats, is facing up to four months on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

Newcastle were reliant on loanee Loic Remy’s 14 goals last season.

Without Remy, the bulk of the goalscoring responsibility will fall on the shoulders of new boy Emmanuel Riviere and Papiss Demba Cisse, who close to a return from long-term injury.

Attacking midfielder Remy Cabella will also be expected to make a significant contribution, while young players Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez and Adam Armstrong are on the fringes of his team.

Asked if he had enough strikers at the club, Pardew said: “I think we have.

“I think we’ve got enough goals in this team to win Premier League games, and I think we have enough in this group to have a good season.

“If I didn’t say that, you’d call me a madman, but I actually do think we have enough.”

Pardew - who takes his team to former club Southampton this afternoon - felt United were priced out of the market for some players, with valuations having been skewed.

Ross McCormack joined relegated Fulham for £11m, while Shane Long went for £12m.

Those prices were an “eye-opener” for Pardew, who conceded that Newcastle couldn’t compete with those teams in the Champions League for other targets.

However, he was happy with the business done by the club, which signed nine players.

“The window was very tough for lots of teams not at the very top of the Premier League because prices were very high,” said Pardew.

“There wasn’t a lot of good product on the market, and it was difficult for teams like ourselves to secure top players.

“I think we’re all going to find it even more difficult in the future because there’s a new TV deal being negotiated by the Premier League, and prices are going to go even higher.

“It’s difficult to know exactly where they’re going to be, particularly for offensive players.

“This market threw up a couple of players where their value was a bit of an eye-opener.

“That was a bit surprising, but we did most of our business early, and I think we did good business with those players.

“Of course we’re very disappointed with Siem’s injury. That came after the window, and it was a blow. We’d have been a lot happier if he had been fit.”
