The Frenchman missed last week’s trip to Manchester City with a knee injury, and will also be unavailable when Villa visit Tyneside tomorrow.

Cabella is recovering well from the injury, but it is not yet clear when he will be back in action.

Newcastle head coach John Carver said: “He’s improving day by day, but to the extent of going in against Manchester United, he needs to be 100 per cent, so I will speak to the medical people and they will fill me in.

“Day by day, it’s changing for the positive, which is good.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Daryl Janmaat will be fit for tomorrow’s game at St James’s Park, while goalkeeper Rob Elliot is around a week away from returning to fitness after a thigh injury.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have recalled 17-year-old Callum Roberts from his loan spell at Conference side Gateshead.

Roberts had dropped out of the Gateshead team over recent weeks, and after the Tyneside club wanted him to play for their reserve side, Newcastle decided to bring him back.
