Santon this week rejoined Inter Milan on loan after three-and-a-half years at St James’s Park.

The defender’s fiance, Chloe Sanderson, claimed he had been “pushed out” of the club on Twitter.

Santon had made just one appearance for the club after recovering from a long-term knee problem which needed surgery last summer.

Asked about Sanderson’s tweets, which were later deleted, head coach Carver said: ”I think it’s a great move for him.

“It’s the club he’s come from, and maybe his girlfriend just finds it difficult because she’ll have to move over there.

“From a footballing point of view, it’s a great situation for him and for us. He wasn’t pushed out.

“I spoke to him. He asked about when he was going to get into the side, and I couldn’t really give him an answer to that.

“I’ve said from day one if you’re in the team, you stay in the team.”

During the left-back’s absence through injury, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara moved ahead of him in the pecking order at Newcastle

“It’s been a difficult situation for Davide,” said Carver. “He’s had his knee problem – he hasn’t featured all season.

“The emergence of Haidara and Dummett has been massive for us. I think David saw that as a bit of an issue.

“I know he can play on the right, but Janmaat’s not done badly, either. He was getting to the stage where he’d played enough Under-21 games, and he now needed to play senior football to show he’s ready.”

Asked about cover in the full-back positions, Carver revealed that Ryan Taylor would be in the squad for tomorrow’s Premier League home game against Stoke City.

“Ryan’s in the squad, and he can play there,” said Carver.

Meanwhile, Santon – whose move will become permanent if he makes 10 appearances – was yesterday unveiled to the Italian media at Inter’s Appiano Gentile base.

The 24-year-old said: “I came here to compete and because Inter is my home – this is where I learned to play. I’m happy.”
