Pools were 1-0 down to Danilo Orsi’s strike for Maidenhead when Oates grabbed the ball, jinked past a few defenders in close proximity before turning another and finding the bottom left corner of the goal.

It was a phenomenal solo effort that would ultimately prove to be in vain as Sam Barratt went on to net a hat-trick for The Magpies to put them 4-1 ahead.

Substitute Danny Elliott grabbed a late consolation for Pools as they suffered their first home defeat of 2021, leaving them fourth in the table.

Oates’ strike was his 12th of the season for Hartlepool and it’s not the first time the 26-year-old has netted a fine solo goal this campaign with his strike in a 4-0 win over Stockport County back in December also earning plenty of plaudits.
