We take a closer look at how the game panned out, who impressed and what both managers, Woodgate and Latics boss Paul Cook, made of the contest. Scroll down and flick through our picture gallery to relive the key moments.
1. Good day: Britt Assombalonga
Not his greatest performance and was quiet for long spells. Got back on the score sheet with a thumping header though - he needed that after three games without a goal. | PA Wire Photo: Owen Humphreys
2. Bad day: Marcus Browne
The winger was subbed at half-time after he was booked in the first half. Woodgate was worried that Browne would get sent off. | 2019 Getty Images Photo: Jan Kruger
3. Key moment: Boro take their chance
Wigan had chances to open the scoring in the first half, most notably when Jamal Lowe dragged a low effort just inches wide. Within a minute of that miss, the hosts opened the scoring though Assombalonga's header. Another tale of fine margins - but this time it went in Boro's favour. | PA Wire Photo: Owen Humphreys
4. How the opposition looked: Wigan Athletic
Paul Cook's side started brightly with Jamal Lowe and Gavin Massey looking particularly lively playing just off towering frontman Kieffer Moore. The visitors failed to take their chances though and were more direct in the second half. Boro withstood the pressure though. | PA Wire Photo: Owen Humphreys
