Former Hartlepool teacher Sue Allen, from Wynyard, is in Funchal, in Madeira, to represent Great Britain in not just one event but three in the Biathle-Triathle-Laser Run European Championships.

Qualifying competitions took place in Dorset and Blackpool earlier in the year in which Sue gained selection in the master age group.

Sue said she took up the sports when she was made redundant from her role as a teacher at Hartlepool’s Ward Jackson Academy in 2021.

She added: "When I was made redundant , I was unfit and had more time on my hands so began running.

"After this I started swimming and joined the masters squad at Stokesley Swim Club.

"After that I took up shooting with a laser pistol and was hooked.

"This then led on to me competing in various competitions, travelling all over the country and ultimately earning a GB vest.

"I am really looking forward to the experience of competing in Madeira and thrilled to be representing GB.

"I will have a very busy week, participating in the Biathle (run /swim/run) on Tuesday, the Triathle ( shoot/swim/run x 2 ) on Thursday and the Laser run ( shoot run shoot run) on Saturday.

"All the elements in each event take place continuously.

"The swim element takes place in the Atlantic Ocean and will be the first time I have raced in open water and not a swimming pool. It would be lovely to medal in any of the events but I have come a long way in three years and at 62 years old I am just happy to be healthy and able to compete at this level.”

The championships take place from July 1-7.
