Golfer Graeme Storm looks to pull off a Hartlepool United great escape

The Hartlepool golfer was “over the moon” to see Pools survive and he’s looking to take a leaf out of Ronnie Moore’s book when the European Tour comes to these shores this week.

Storm has struggled so far in 2015 but hopes to launch a fightback of his own, starting with the BMW Championship.

“I am in a similar position to Pools, but look at how things turned around there,” the 37-year-old told SportMail.

Storm finds himself down in 199th place in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai league or the Order of Merit in ‘old money’.

The Hartlepool Golf Club member says what Moore achieved at Victoria Park shows nothing is impossible in sport and he will not chuck in the towel on the golf course.

“We were down and out,” said Storm. “Pools were given no chance weren’t they?

“Some people might look at what I’ve done this year and say I have no chance.

“But there is plenty of golf still to be played and a lot of money still to be won.

“I will keep working hard and keep giving it everything.”

Storm says he takes inspiration from Pools and, despite a schedule which takes him all over the world, did get to see his hometown team.

“I was over the moon we stayed up,” said the former Manor College of Technology pupil who was a keen footballer himself as a youngster.

“I went to the Mansfield game when we won 1-0 and that was part of the great four or five-game run the team put together.

“What a job Ronnie has done, unbelievable really.

“He’s the right man for the job and I hope we can keep him.

“If he gets a bit of money to spend I don’t see any reason why we can’t do what Wycombe have done this season and mount a challenge for promotion.

“They only stayed up on the final day of last season but look at what they’ve done this year.

“The crowd have been fantastic, the atmosphere at the game I was at was brilliant and the supporters have come in their droves right until the end of the season.

“It just shows what can be done with a fantastic manager and with the crowd behind the lads.”

Storm performed something of a Houdini act last year on the European Tour.

He was staring down the proverbial barrel at 159 in the rankings and with the top 110 retaining their card he was in danger of dropping out of the game’s elite.

But Storm hit form with a vengeance and came agonisingly close to winning his first tournament since 2007.

He finished runner-up at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, where he played some superb golf before losing in a play-off with American David Lipsky.

Storm then followed that up with 12th place at the ISPS Handa Wales Open at Celtic Manor and 17th at the Portugal Masters.

However, he wants to avoid a repeat of last year’s woes.

“Things turned around last year,” he said. “ don’t want to leave it too late.

“I want to accumulate some results to earn enough cash to keep my tour card and there are enough tournaments still to play.”

Storm could be gettiong a call from Moore after showing some good footwork yesterday.

The Poolie not only competed in a footgolf contest against fellow tour pros George Coetzee and Byeong Hun An at Richings Park, but won it.

“It was nice to win something for a change,” he smiled. “It was a bit of fun and something a bit different.

“It was a chance to have a laugh and to get the name of my sponsors, GAC, out there. I hope I’ve done both.”
