World Indoor Bowls Council World Championships proving popular at Hartlepool Indoor Bowls Club

A major world bowls championship being staged in Hartlepool is going down a treat with the fans of the sport in the area.

The 2018 World Indoor Bowls Council World Singles and Mixed Pairs Championships is taking place at Hartlepool Indoor Bowls Club this week until to Friday.

Players from as far afield as the Netherlands, Canada, Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are among those taking part in the four-day event at the club’s Mill House site in Raby Road.

Carl Higgins, the club’s president and director, said the tournament is proving popular with bowls fans and participants.

He said: “The tournament has got well underway and it has been so far, so good.

“We’ve had freat feedback received from players and the executive committee regarding the competition and the hospitality shown by Hartlepool Indoor Bowls Club members and committee.

“The standard of bowls is exceptional and we are all looking forward to the rest of the week.”

Carl added: “We are proud and delighted to welcome the world championships to Hartlepool for the very first time.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for players and non-players alike to watch some of the world’s top sportsmen and women in action.”

Tickets for seats will be available on the door, priced £3 per person for each full day or £10 for a four-day ticket.

Qualifying games for Mixed Pairs, Ladies and Gents Singles take place throughout Thursday with the finals taking place from 9am on Friday morning.

The Mayor of Hartlepool, Councillor Paul Beck, officially opened the event.
