5. Patrick Roberts - 6/10
This season has been a frustrating one for Roberts after returning to Boro on loan from Manchester City. His first loan spell was a promising one, though, and was unfortunately hampered by a hamstring injury. The playmaker helped Boro stay up after the season resumed and scored an important winner at Reading in July. Photo: Alex Davidson
6. John Obi Mikel - 6/10
The former Chelsea midfielder still looked assured in the middle of the park but couldn't stop a dismal run of results which saw Boro drop out of the play-off places at the end of the 2018/18 season. Photo: George Wood
7. Rajiv van La Parra 2/10
It was hoped the Dutchman could provide the pace and width Boro were lacking, yet he made just three league appearances after joining the Teessiders on loan from Huddersfield. A back injury didn't help but van La Parra's lack of game time was still surprising. Photo: Michael Steele
8. Martin Cranie - 4/10
The defender made nine appearances for Boro at the end of the 2017/18 season yet just one of those were starts. His late cameos became a regular sight under Tony Pulis as the Teessiders looked to protect their leads and shut up shop. Photo: Getty Images
