Seaton Carew golfers for Mail on Sunday National Classic in Spain

SEATON Carew Golf Club’s Men’s team will fly off to Spain next month after reaching the finals of the Mail on Sunday National Classic.

The six-strong Seaton team will travel to El Rompido golf course to compete with the other four finalists.

Seaton golf club President John Hall, who manages the team, said: “It’s a tremendous achievement.

“It’s one of the biggest club competitions in Great Britain, over 2,000 clubs have entered teams.”

He added: “The fact it’s abroad means it is very exciting. We’ll be driving down to Gatwick and then flying to Faro in Portugal before getting a coach across to El Rompido.”

Seaton qualified for the finals after coming through nine rounds of qualifying.

The latest round saw them beat Polmont GC from Falkirk 4-1.

The squad for the finals in Spain will be Hugh Hamilton, Ian Hendry, Jonathan Conley, Kris Diamond, Robbie McGahan and Michael Wilson.

Hall said: “The players are really up for it.

“We’ve got a good squad of players and we’ve had pretty much the same team in every match.”

He added: “All four teams will have good low handicapped players.

“We have got there after nine rounds, so will go and hope to win.

“We have every chance.”

The Seaton squad head into the finals in good form after their recent win in the Durham County Clark Cup.

Seaton last qualified for the finals in 1995, and in 1993 before that, when the finals were held in France.

Hendry was in the team who reached the finals last time, a team which Hall managed.

Hall said: “We’ve got some very good players. Ian will be in the squad again and he’s probably a better player now than he was then.”

Hall, who will continue as club President until December, has managed the men’s team for over 20 years.

He said: “It’s very satisfying [to manage the team to the finals] I am not sure how much longer I will be managing the team but at the end of the day it’s the players who will be hitting the shots.”

The team will compete in the finals at the El Rompido course from November 16-20.
