Hartlepool Aldi supermarket store announces expansion plans

A Hartlepool supermarket could be extended to create more shopping space.

The borough council’s planning department has received an application for the Aldi store, off Dunston Road, to extend the premises at the rear, along its boundary with Hart Lane, to provide additional floorspace.

They also propose the rearranged parking spaces to provide four new electric vehicle spaces as well as a new customer entrance and exit.

In addition, the plans include a new trolley bay, the relocation of customer cycle parking to provide 10 spaces and the repositioning of plant equipment, replacement fencing and landscaping changes to accommodate the extension.

An accompanying design and access statement notes that the proposed extension aims to “increase the overall sales area of the store”.

It was noted that “careful consideration” had been given to the site layout and the impact of the extension on the car park.

The design and access statement goes on: “It is considered that the extension of the existing store will have no adverse effect upon the site and its surroundings, nor have any impact on the residential amenity of the surrounding properties.

“The scale and massing of the extension is complimentary to the context of the building, whilst improving the operation of the foodstore for its customers.

“The roofscape has been carefully considered to meet the operational and maintenance needs of Aldi, whilst also blending into the surrounding character of the site.”

A decision on the plans is expected following a consultation.
