An elderly man had to be taken to hospital after he was punched in the face and hit his head in an alleged assault in Hartlepool.

A man in his seventies was taken to hospital after he was reportedly punched in the face – causing him to fall and hit his head – in an assault in York Road, in Hartlepool.

The incident happened after the man tried to intervene when two males who had been acting “aggressively” in the street approached a younger man.

One of the two males then punched the elderly man, which caused him to fall backwards and hit his head.

The alleged assault reportedly happened outside Lloyds bank, in York Road, just before 3.30pm on Wednesday, February 2.

Police have confirmed that they attended the incident and an officer helped the man to get to hospital.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “We dealt with a report of an assault on York Road on February 2 at 3.28pm.

“It was reported that two unknown males were acting aggressively in the street. A man in his 70s made a comment about their behaviour and tried to intervene when they approached a younger man.

“One of the two males is then reported to have punched the man in his 70s to the face causing him to fall backwards and hit his head.

“Police officers attended and an officer assisted the victim with getting to hospital.”

Police have added that no arrests have been made at this time.
