Hartlepool Mail Letter of the week: Tainted blood scandal is 'rotten to the core'
Some events transcend politics and one such event is the contaminated blood scandal.
That tainted blood was administered by the NHS to unwitting patients is the starkest example.
The victims and families - including Hartlepool-born Peter Longstaff's widow Carol Grayson - of an appalling tragedy have been left fighting against the authorities for several decades to obtain a proper investigation.
The question should not be why have a public inquiry, but why haven’t we had one sooner?
There are those, I’m thinking in particular of Labour MP Andy Burnham, who say there has been a monumental cover up.
The more I hear, the more I’m convinced there’s something rotten at the core of Government that has prevented this inquiry coming sooner.
