Hartlepool United youth supremo quits club

Hartlepool United academy manager John Hewitson has left the club.

Hewitson is the latest departure from Victoria Park, following the exit of first-team coach Craig Harrison earlier this week.

He had been in charge of Pools' academy since 2010.

During his time at the helm the club has produced a number of players who have moved on to better things, the likes of Luke James, Brad Walker and Connor Simpson coming through the system on his watch.

The youth boss has decided to leave after securing employment elsewhere, amid uncertain financial times at Pools.

"The decision wasn’t easy, but, with the ongoing instability and the uncertainty over the future of the club, I have decided to leave.

"I am truly grateful for the opportunity that the club gave me, and for the seven and a half years I have worked here.

"As Academy manager I have worked very hard to develop and improve the system and the club has seen the benefits of that through youth team players progressing to the first team or by revenue coming in from the sales of players who have come through the system.

"I have worked with some terrific people over the years and I will always look back at my time with fondness.

"I truly hope that the club finds a buyer and looks to secure staff roles as soon as possible."

Chairwoman Pam Duxbury said: "I would like to thank John for his long service and his support.

"His work and leadership of the Academy has been excellent and that is highlighted by the excellent results we have had not just recently but over the years.

"This season, our Under-16s have won a national final and the youth team have progressed to the Northern Area final of the Youth Alliance Cup – those achievements are down in no small measure to John’s hard work and dedication."

Meanwhile, Ian McGuckin remains as lead phase coach in Pools’ academy, Antony Sweeney is lead phase coach (12-16 years), and Gary Boagey remains to cover the 8-11 age group.
