Family lead tributes to 'much-loved' grandmother killed in crash on Hartlepool's A689

A family grieving for the loss of a grandmother following a crash have led tributes to the 75-year-old as collision investigators revealed they have now arrested five men over the tragedy.

It was first reported as a two-car incident.

But Cleveland Police have now said it involved four vehicles and confirmed five men have now been questioned over what happened.

Three, aged 19, 20 and 25, were all taken into custody in the hours after the incident while a 24-year-old and 26-year-old have since been arrested.

All have been released under investigation.

Police have appealed for witnesses who saw or captured footage of a red Audi A4 convertible and a black Volkswagen Golf in the lead up to the incident.

They have now said a second Golf, with grey paintwork, and a Citroen Picasso were also involved.

In statement released through police, Margaret’s family said: “Margaret was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and friend who will be greatly missed.”

Her loved ones have asked for privacy as they grieve together.

The North East Ambulance Service called in the Great North Air Ambulance to help and sent two ambulance crews, an officer, two Hazard Area Response Teams (Hart) and a specialist paramedic, while Cleveland Fire Brigade sent three crews.

The road was closed until 10pm.

Police have issued a fresh appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the manner of driving or have dash cam footage of a red Audi A4 convertible, which had its roof down, and a black Volkswagen Golf between the A689 junctions with the A167 Rushyford and the A19 roundabout at Wolviston.

Further footage is also requested of a red Audi A4, a black Volkswagen Golf and a grey Volkswagen Golf between the A19 at Wolviston roundabout and the A689 towards Hartlepool.

Footage is requested for both stretches of road between 12.15pm and 12.45pm.
