Hartlepool teenager recovering from cancer amazes instructors by qualifying to scuba dive

A Hartlepool teenager has been hailed “an inspiration” after battling back from cancer to become a qualified scuba diver.

Fourteen-year-old Tayler has stunned instructors, family and friends with her amazing transformation.

She has achieved what once seemed impossible thanks to her determination, resilience and the dedicated support of her Learn to Swim instructor Ben White at Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool service.

Just three years ago, Tayler was unable to complete the 25‑metre swim required at primary school.

When she was just seven, she was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and underwent high‑toxicity chemotherapy.

The lifesaving treatment had lasting effects, impacting her heart, causing nerve damage, and worsening issues with her body’s ability to sense movement and position.

Tayler is also dyslexic and finds it challenging to take in and retain information.

But she has now successfully completed two diver certifications, is certified to drive a boat and has an open water swim qualification.

Tayler also recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by snorkelling and scuba diving on holiday in the Maldives.

Her mum, Chelsea, introduced Tayler to swimming instructor Ben who adapted his teaching approach to suit her.

Rather than relying solely on verbal instruction, Ben modelled movements, demonstrated techniques, and carefully paced sessions, knowing when to push and when to pause due to Tayler’s heart condition.

“Watching Tayler’s confidence in the water grow has been incredible,” he said.

“After everything she’s been through, it’s been a privilege to see her enjoying herself, believing in herself, and doing so well.”

Chelsea paid tribute to Ben as “an amazing teacher and a real asset to the Active Hartlepool team”.

“Ben treats every learner as an individual,” she said. “He understands exactly how to motivate them and brings out the very best in his students.”

The council says Tayler’s story highlights Active Hartlepool’s commitment to inclusive, supportive swimming programmes for young people of all abilities.

Councillor Rob Darby said: “Tayler’s achievement is nothing short of remarkable.

“She is an inspiration to everyone in Hartlepool and a wonderful example of what can be achieved when courage and hard work are matched by high-quality support.

“I would also like to congratulate Ben White and the Active Hartlepool team, whose dedication to providing inclusive opportunities is helping young people develop confidence, skills and a lifelong love of being active.”
