Hartlepool United beat Leeds United Under-21s with Terry Bondo bagging a brace

Hartlepool United beat Leeds United Under-21s in the National League Cup.

Terry Bondo scored twice as Hartlepool United beat Leeds United Under-21s 3-1 at Victoria Park in the National League Cup.

Summer signing Bondo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute, fellow summer signing Chris Popov adding a second three minutes later. Pools extended their lead in the 70th minute, 19-year-old forward Bondo bagging his second of the night. Leeds scored a consolation but Pools managed to secure their first win of the group stage, to leave them bottom with three points.

Heading into the game, Pools head coach Pete Wild made nine changes with captain Jack Hunter returning to lead the side, there was also a return for defender Neo Eccleston, who is available for the competition despite currently being on a 3-game ban in the National League. Meanwhile, Liam Gibson also featured after his return from a hamstring injury. Competition rules state National League clubs must start four players who either started the last National League game - or will start the next.

Pools’ previous National League Cup games saw defeats to Middlesbrough U21s (club record 10-0 loss), Everton U21s (0-1) and Newcastle United U21s (1-2).
