A Hartlepool primary school continues to be an “outstanding” school following its latest report by education inspectors.

St John Vianney Catholic Primary School, in King Oswy Drive, received the rating – the highest of four grades – following a visit by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted).

Although the current system of judgements is being phased out, the newly-published report covers a two-day inspection at the end of last term before changes were announced.

It states: “The school has a positive impact on the lives and futures of everyone.

"These events build strong relationships and a sense of belonging.”

Ofsted praised the school’s curriculum for giving pupils “an exceptional education”.

The report states: “It is well established and developed from the starting point of the most disadvantaged pupils, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

“The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects tailored to meet the needs of all pupils. It aims high in its ambitions.”

Ofsted noted how “staff are experts at teaching this curriculum” and that they “address any barriers to learning before misconceptions can develop.”

Headteacher John Hardy said: “I am delighted that the hard work of our children, staff and governors and the support of our families has been recognised in the Ofsted inspection in the last week of the summer term.

"Now that their one-word judgement is going – as one of the last schools in the country to be judged in this way – we are all pleased that it was this one word.”

St John Vianney has been given no areas to improve in.

It was also judged “outstanding” during its previous inspection in 2008.

Ofsted is replacing the graded system of judgements with a report card which aims to give parents and guardians a more complete picture of how schools are performing.
