Latest Ofsted report released for County Durham primary school
A County Durham school for autistic children has earned glowing praise from Ofsted inspectors just a year after opening its doors.
Trimdon Hill School, in Trimdon Grange, achieved a “strong standard” across all seven areas assessed, with inspectors praising its nurturing environment, personalised teaching and the care shown to pupils.
The school, which opened in September 2025, was also commended for creating a sense of belonging among children, with bullying described as “almost unheard of”.
According to Ofsted inspectors, pupils are “very well cared for at this supportive and nurturing school”.

The report states: “Staff understand pupils and their needs precisely and adaptations are made regularly in each classroom to support pupils’ learning.
“The curriculum is designed to meet pupils' specific needs and clear, ambitious targets are in place for children from the early years onwards.
“Many pupils join the school with significant gaps in their skills and knowledge but staff enact the curriculum skilfully so that these gaps are quickly filled.
“Each pupil is supported academically and personally.”

Success is regularly celebrated at this school and according to Ofsted, pupils “develop a sense of belonging”.
Despite many pupils having barriers in communication and learning, unkind language or actions are "never tolerated” at this school.
As a result, bullying is “almost unheard of”.
However, Trimdon Hill has also been asked to improve in a couple of areas.
The report states: “Leaders should ensure that they sustain the high-quality curriculum and high standards in teaching so that all pupils quickly and securely develop the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful.
“Leaders should also ensure that their actions have a transformational impact on how well pupils with special educational needs and or disabilities and other barriers to their learning achieve, thrive and belong and that this work supports best practice locally and nationally.”
Head teacher Victoria Muir said: “To achieve a strong standard across every area just 10 months after opening is an incredibly proud moment for everyone.
“It reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff as well as the commitment and support of our families and local community which have helped the school to thrive from the very beginning.”
