From essential workers to kind-hearted neighbours and volunteers, Mail readers got in touch to nominate their Stars of 2020 – the champions who have gone the extra mile for the Hartlepool community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Pat Smith: “Has to be Les & Jackie Watts who have entertained us every Saturday since March. Their discos are the highlight of the week for people in the town, across the country & also from Ireland, Australia & USA.

"We are able to forget all that is going on at the moment & relive happier times through music, lovely memories & banter. Once again we thank you both. You are amazing.”

Emma Louise Picton: “My mam and dad, Sandy Picton and Stephen Picton and all the rest of the volunteers at Poolie Time and Burbank Community for their hard work during the first and second lockdown feeding the vulnerable and people in need.”

Carly Douglas: “Dwane Douglas for organising charity events to raise money for Macmillan and NHS, he delivered 14 iPads to the Covid ward to keep in touch with family over Christmas with the money that was raised on their 14 mile bike ride round Hartlepool! Not only that but helping out with Brian Minton and Poolie Time Exchange where he gathered £1100 in less than 2 days to help with vulnerable people over Christmas time, he personally delivered some of the hampers and Christmas dinners to the people of Hartlepool.”
