Thousands of people affected by Hartlepool power cut as Marina businesses forced to close

A number of Hartlepool businesses were forced to close their doors to the public as a power cut disrupted trade across the Marina.

Northern Powergrid received reports from 1,445 customers in the TS24 area of town on Monday, February 23, claiming they had lost power.

Buildings across the Marina, from Mainsforth Terrace to Middleton Road, lost electricity shortly before 9am, with all power being restored by 12.30pm.

A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said: “We experienced an unplanned power cut affecting up to 1,445 customers in the Hartlepool area at 08.52 this morning following a fault on our high‑voltage network.

Northern Powergrid received reports from 1,445 customers in the TS24 area of town on Monday, February 23, claiming they had lost power.

“Thanks to swift action from our control engineers, we were able to restore power to 1,297 customers within just five minutes by rerouting electricity through alternative parts of the network.

“A smaller group of 148 customers remained without power while our teams investigated the cause.”

A number of shops and businesses in the area had to temporarily close due to the outage, including the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Jacksons Wharf.

Northern Powergrid continued: “Our engineers on site have confirmed that the outage was the result of damage to an underground high‑voltage cable caused by a third‑party contractor working in the retail park.

“Our field teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to carry out repairs, and all customers were restored at around 12.30.

"We’d like to thank everyone affected for their patience while we completed this work.”
