Mrs Mortimer announced her support for the former PM, who was himself ousted by the Tories in the summer, after Ms Truss resigned on Thursday, October 20 after just 44 days in charge.

The Hartlepool MP said he could unite the Conservative party and the country.

A new Conservative leader, and third Prime Minister this year, is due to be in place by Friday, October 28.

Mrs Mortimer posted on her Facebook page on Thursday night: “I’ve spoken to Boris this evening and I’m backing him for the leadership.

“He got Brexit done. He led us through the Covid pandemic.

“He supports Levelling Up in Hartlepool. He can unite our Party and our country.”

Mr Johnson played a key part in Mrs Mortimer’s campaign last year, visiting Hartlepool three times in the run up to the by-election, and again after she was elected.

She became the first Conservative MP in Hartlepool in 57 years and secured a majority of almost 7,000.

Tory leadership candidates need the backing of at least 100 fellow MPs to stand, meaning there can be a maximum of three.

There will then be an online vote of party members, but opposition parties are calling for a general election.

Mr Johnson has not officially announced his intention to stand, but has received the backing of a number of MPs.
