Hartlepool United had to settle for a draw against Carlisle United with neither side able to break the deadlock on a scrappy night at Brunton Park.

Brennan Dickenson struck the bar with Pools goalkeeper Ben Killip beaten in the first half while Graeme Lee’s side had their own misfortune with the woodwork in the second half as Mark Howard was somehow able to divert David Ferguson’s first time effort onto the bar.

Reagan Ogle came close to stealing the points with the final kick of the game when he got on the end of a deep Nicky Feathertstone freekick which Howard was again on hand to prevent.

In truth, neither side did enough to merit the three points and following their late defeat at Bristol Rovers at the weekend Pools will be pleased to have avoided another late defeat here.

How has that stayed out?

Holohan with a clever pass to find Molyneux inside the right of the penalty area and his cross finds Ferguson who meets it first time and fires at goal but it hits the underside of the diving Howard and cannons off the bar and away. Remarkable

Killip collects a cross from Armer as Molyneux just can’t reach Featherstone’s through ball at the other end. It’s all a bit scrappy now.

Alessandra straight into the thick of things with a foul on Ferguson

Pools enjoying a moment in the Carlisle half as Ogle finds himself free down the right on a couple of occasions but the home side defend the crosses well. It was Byrne’s initial pass which set Ogle free

Killip called into action twice in a matter of seconds as he collects Senior’s cross before Shelton loses it just outside of the area to Gibson who curls into Killip’s arms. Bit of a let off for Shelton

Both teams make a change as Shelton comes on for Crawford for Pools

Omotoye is replaced by ex-Pools’ man Alessandra

Molyneux is flagged offside having made Ogle’s searching ball.

Pools find space down the left with Ferguson and his cross is met by Byrne of all people, the defender having continued his run, but he nods wide. Close.

Better from Pools. Cullen comes deep for the ball and releases Holohan who tries to find Molyneux in the area but Feeney does enough to clear.

Pools finally able to settle into the half and get their foot on the ball. Ferguson just can’t keep a ball in down the left.
