A valiant defensive display from Pools was ultimately undone at the end of the first half of extra-time as Bruno Andrade put the Ammies in front with a tap-in at the back post.

Mani Dieseruvwe then confirmed the hosts’ place in Monday night’s second-round draw with the last kick of the game following a swift counter-attack.

After starting the season unbeaten in their opening six matches, it's now two consecutive defeats for Pools as they look to get things back on track at Eastleigh in the National League next weekend.

Challinor pleased with performance at Salford

The match also marked the first time Pools had failed to score a goal away from home in 24 games – a club record run stretching back to the goalless draw at Chorley in August 2019.

Here’s how fans reacted to the defeat on Twitter – with one consistent theme…

@KDixon1984 commented: “Good performance after last weeks hammering, need to put our chances away but at least we are creating them!”

Anthony Harrison agreed: “Much better performance, played well but we need to start taking chances and Parkhouse I am not impressed with at all. Need to stay switched on at the back, that’s what’s cost us yet again. Keeper and new CB very solid.”

Dan Patton was full of praise as he tweeted: “Nothing wrong with that at all, top performance.”

@Douggy1908 added: “No shame in taking Salford to extra time well-played lads, class effort with a new shape and new player only coming in yesterday. Just need to put some of those chances away. Onwards and upwards.”

Dan Temple wants to see a further addition as he said: “Just need a striker in and we won't be far off a decent side.”

Anthony Skinner asked: Does Raj fancy splashing a bit more cash and getting a propper goal scorer? Sure Peter Crouch would play for the right price.”

Cullen Watson summed things up nicely: “We create and don’t put them away, that’s down to strikers. In between the boxes we matched them no problem. Mistake from Johnson and on a different day we’d have a penalty too. In need of a striker and quickly!”
