Hartlepool United goalkeeper situation explained by Dave Challinor as former Chelsea stopper Mitchell Beeney 'made an offer', Ben Killip and Dimi Konstantopoulos latest

Dave Challinor is continuing to weigh up the options in Hartlepool United’s goalkeeper department going into the closing stages of the season.

Mitch Beeney has been in between the sticks since the turn of the year and kept his first clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Stockport County.

The 24-year-old has been at Pools for almost two months on non-contract terms though Challinor revealed an offer is on the table for the former Chelsea youth goalkeeper.

“He’s been made an offer but he’s got to look at his personal circumstances and his family being still down south,” said the United manager.

“He needs to make decisions there but we’re pretty fluid and flexible in terms of where we’re at – I’m not in a mad stir in regards to doing stuff.

“Ben [Killip] has had to be patient and Mitch is still a work in progress, I still think he can be fitter but a clean sheet will do him the world of good and I’m quite happy with where we’re at goalkeeper wise.

“It’s the one position where it’s important to get it right but there are potential things we can do if something crops up really quickly. I’m quite content with where we are.”

Former first choice goalkeeper Ben Killip hasn’t started a match since his error in the 2-2 draw against Barrow in Pools’ final game of 2019.

The England C international is believed to be one of only four players contracted for next season as it stands as Challinor looks to address the goalkeeping situation.

A potential short term fix or signing could be in the offing in the near future, though what is clear is that club legend Dimi Konstantopoulos won’t be returning after his ill-fated second debut at Harrogate Town.

“Dimi hasn’t been back since the Harrogate game,” Challinor said.

“I think he’s training at Spennymoor now. He’s in a situation where he’s unsure about what he’s doing and where he is.

“We have loads of goalkeepers training with us every week who are part time at other clubs. Dimi hasn’t trained with us and I don’t envisage that situation changing.”
