Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor lets his emotions get the better of him in response to last gasp 2-1 win over Yeovil Town

There’s no better feeling in football than scoring a last minute winner, admitted Hartlepool United manager Dave Challinor following Saturday’s 2-1 win over Yeovil Town.

Pools trailed with just over quarter of an hour left to play at Victoria Park as a wonder strike from Tom Knowles saw Yeovil in front.

But an eighth goal of the season for Luke Armstrong and a last-minute tap-in from Gavan Holohan set up by substitute Joe Grey helped Pools seal a seventh straight win on home soil.

And while celebrating the last minute winner, Challinor admitted he may have gone a bit over the top.

“There’s not [a better feeling in football],” he said afterwards.

“Sometimes you let the emotions get the better of you a little bit and Buster [Pools’ physio] has probably got a crooked nose as a result of it!

"The feeling would have been greater had there been 4,000 in here, it would have been crazy. It’s great to win in that manner, it’s horrible to lose in that manner.

"The game could have gone either way but I was telling the players yesterday that the points we'd taken from losing positions has been nowhere near good enough this season but they’ve helped go some way into putting that right here.

"The last time we conceded first and won was Chesterfield in the opening week of the season and I don’t want to make a habit of it but it’s good to see us win in that way again.

"The players kept at it and got what we thought was a valuable point but to go and get the winner and make it seven wins in a row here makes it all the more special.”

The close fought match looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw until Joe Grey charged toward goal only to see the ball just miss his foot and go out wide. At that point, Challinor thought the chance had gone, but the 17-year-old substitute had other ideas.

"Absolutely, I thought that was it,” he added.

“If there had been crowds I’m sure there would have been groans but he regained his composure, managed to beat his player and picks out Gav for a tap in. For someone so young, it’s a really good sign.”
