A slow start to the game saw Pools fall two behind as Ben House and then Tyrone Barnett struck for the hosts.
Dave Challinor’s side rallied though, and put the pressure on their hosts with little reward – until Joe Grey’s late volley, which proved merely a consolation despite a late spell of heavy pressure.
But who impressed at the Silverlake Stadium, and who still has work to do? Scroll down as Mark Donnelly dishes out his merit marks from the clash:

9. Gavan Holohan
Forced the Eastleigh 'keeper into some smart stops with efforts from range in the first-half and kept getting into good areas - even if things wouldn't quite drop. Had a big chance to net in the second half after a scramble in the box. 6 Photo: Mark Fletcher

10. Rhys Oates
Had one effort from range in the first half but couldn't produce any of his magic on this occasion. 5 Photo: Mark Fletcher

11. Luke Armstrong
Wasn't able to benefit from the usual service he receives in and around the area, but battled well and was a presence up top. 6 Photo: Mark Fletcher

12. Joe Grey
Offered a different option out wide as Pools chased the game and scored a well-taken goal late on. 6 Photo: Mark Fletcher
