Former Hartlepool United striker backed to shine with National League North neighbours
Former Hartlepool United striker Danny Johnson scored on his debut for new club Spennymoor Town.
Danny Johnson has been backed to move on from his disappointing spell at Hartlepool United and ‘hit the ground running’ with new club Spennymoor Town.
The former Leyton Orient and Walsall striker joined Pools last summer after being linked with a move to Victoria Park on a number of occasions in previous years - but he struggled to make an impact during what was his only season with the club. Johnson was one of 13 players to leave the club earlier this summer and he has now linked up with former Pools midfielder Tommy Miller with National League North neighbours Spennymoor.

Johnson made an immediate impact with a goal in the Moors pre-season win at Blyth Spartans on Saturday - and Miller has insisted the striker will thrive at the Brewery Field this season.
He told The Mail: “We had good conversations with him before he signed. We were very impressed with him, with his attitude, he’s hungry, he wants to do well. He had a very frustrating season at Hartlepool and it didn’t work out for one reason or another. But if you get Danny into the right positions, he will score you goals and if you get Danny Johnson firing, he can be a very dangerous striker at any level. I was delighted he got off the mark today, albeit in a pre-season friendly - but you want to hit the ground running and he has done that.”
Competition

Johnson will now compete with Moors legend Glen Taylor and fellow new signings Richie Bennett and Aidan Marsh for a place in Miller’s starting eleven when the new National League North season gets underway next month. The former Pools midfielder has expressed his determination to ensure his side are capable of challenging on a number of fronts and is hopeful his newly enhanced forward options can thrive on the competition for a starting place.

“That’s what we want, we want options,” he explained. “Glen has been the best around for a number of years and he’s always going to score goals so it was no surprise he got the first one. He’s a fantastic lad and a fantastic player - but we have brought in three strikers to compete and we want that competition because we want to be strong this season.”
