Hartlepool United youngster's surprise appearance in Hebburn Town win explained
A Hartlepool United youngster was handed an unexpected opportunity to impress in Tuesday night’s friendly win at Hebburn Town.
Hartlepool United youngster Joe Aungiers was handed a chance to impress Lee Clark during the second half of Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly win at National League North club Hebburn Town.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has been an unused substitute in National League fixtures on eight occasions over the last two seasons and was named on a list of 13 players that were to be released when their contracts came to an end earlier this summer.

However, after earning senior experience during loan spells with the likes of Whitby Town, West Auckland Town and Whickham over the last 18 months, Aungiers has continued to train with Pools and impressed head coach Lee Clark ahead of Tuesday night’s visit to Hebburn. The youngster came off the bench to replace Corey McKeown during the final 12 minutes of the game - and Clark has explained why Aungiers was handed an unexpected opportunity and revealed he is planning to watch the Pools Under-21s in action in a friendly at Northern Premier League East Division club Ashington on Wednesday night.

Speaking after the win at Hebburn, Clark said: “Joe was part of the Under-21s set-up and he played really well at the weekend. I watched some of the footage. I will probably go up to Ashington tomorrow night (Wednesday) and watch them and he impressed in training yesterday so I thought lets give him a little chance when the opportunity was there. He did really, really well.”
