Hartlepool United boss Pete Wild has admitted that he likes to “live on the edge” following his side’s spirited 2-1 victory over Hornchurch on Saturday afternoon.

The Pools manager cut an impassioned figure in the dugout as the hosts came from behind to claim a vital three points at Victoria Park thanks to a Ryan Inniss own goal and a superb Luke Charman strike - all while playing with 10 men following Neo Eccleston’s red card.

And speaking after the final whistle to BBC Radio Tees, Wild made no apologies for his ecstatic reaction to the win. He said: “I have to wind myself up sometimes. I'm a bit of a placid fella, as I come across. But from 3pm to 5pm, I'm just desperate to win every tackle, every header - and I want that to come across to my players.

“So I have to live on the edge. I'm on two bookings already, aren't I? But if I live on the edge, I want the players to live on the edge, and that's how we have to behave.

“And I care. I care about winning every football match. When I come to a footy club, I'm all in - and I want to be all in. So if I'm all in, I need to show that. I need to show my emotions, and I love winning football matches. And I certainly love winning them in that manner.”

Elsewhere, the Pools boss lavished praise on match-winner Charman, adding: “Luke's my type of person. Top lad, top player. We'll get the best out of him. I'm so pleased that he got his goal. He's been ill most of the week too, so it was really pleasing for him.

“But the message was, ‘Jordan Hugill has just gone and put himself out there against three big centre-halves. I need the same from you, I need the same intensity that Jordan Hugill gave’.

“And he did it to a man, and he gets what he gets. The harder you work, the luckier you get... We all know that. And that's a version of that today.”
