Hartlepool United youngster awaits news on future after helping Hebburn to historic title success

Hartlepool United youngster Campbell Darcy was part of the Hebburn Town squad that secured a historic success over the weekend.

Hartlepool United youngster Campbell Darcy helped loan club Hebburn Town clinch a historic title success on Saturday after the Hornets were crowned as champions of the Northern Premier League for the first time.

The Pools academy product initially joined the South Tyneside club on an initial one-month loan in September and made an impressive impact to earn praise from Hebburn boss Daniel Moore as his side began to find momentum in their unexpected push for the Premier Division title. Darcy was recalled by Pools ahead of the festive period and was an unused substitute on a handful of occasions before returning for a second loan spell at the Trustmark Group Stadium in mid-January and that stint was extended until the end of a season that will go down in Hebburn history.

Moore’s men went into Saturday’s home clash with Rushall Olympic knowing they would be crowned as champions and secure a first ever promotion into the National League North if they could match title rivals Hednesford Town’s result in their game with Ashton United. Darcy was handed yet another start by Moore and he produced a hardworking display on the right-hand side of a front three as a goal in each half from Michael Turner and winger Joao Gomes gave Hebburn a win that was enough to see them crowned as champions in front of a capacity 3,000 crowd.

Darcy reflected on the first loan spells of what appears to be a promising young career positively and admitted his lack of game-time at Hartlepool meant he was determined to make a major impact during his time with Hebburn.

Speaking after Saturday’s title-clinching win, the Pools youngster said: “It’s been excellent here. Obviously, I wasn’t really in and around it at Hartlepool so it was good to come here and get the experience I’ve had. I couldn’t really ask for a better loan to be honest. It’s been brilliant to come back. When I went back to Hartlepool I wasn’t really playing, I was on the bench and all I wanted to do was come back here. It’s been worth it.”

Darcy is one of a number of Pools players that find themselves out of contract this summer and there is uncertainty over what could lie ahead. The departure of manager Nicky Featherstone means a new manager will be appointed over the coming weeks and months and that could not have come at a worse time for those awaiting news on whether their services will be retained or whether the next steps in their career will be taken elsewhere. Darcy admitted he would be open to a return to Hebburn but stressed he will ‘see what happens’ with Pools.

He said: “I just need to wait for the decision this summer and go from there. It would be good to come back next season, we will see what happens. I’ll see what I get offered at Hartlepool, I could be there, I just don’t know yet but we will see what happens.”
