'I don't know' - Nicky Featherstone assesses next step after Hartlepool United departure
Nicky Featherstone's Hartlepool United reign ended with a defeat at National League rivals Boston United on Saturday.
Nicky Featherstone insisted he is proud of the job he has done during his time as Hartlepool United manager - but remains uncertain what his next move will be after his reign came to an end following Saturday’s defeat at Boston United.
The former Pools midfielder stepped up to take interim charge following the departure of Simon Grayson in October and was handed the reins on a permanent basis after overseeing an upturn in form that raised hopes over a possible push for the National League play-off places. Some damaging defeats during the second half of the campaign meant a top seven spot remained out of reach and last week brought confirmation Featherstone was to step away from his role following the end of the season after a review led by football recruitment and advisory firm Bromby & Partners.
During the announcement, owner and chairman Landon Smith admitted he wanted Featherstone to remain with the club in a different capacity and the duo held talks last week. However, the Pools stalwart admitted he remains unsure over what could lie ahead as he prepares to take the next step in his career.
Speaking after the defeat at Boston, he told the club website: “It’s something I’ll probably reflect on later on and properly think about it. It’s somebody else’s job to take forward now. I am proud of the job we’ve done, we’ve had a lot to deal with and we have done a good job in the circumstances so hopefully can take that on and get even more points next season.”
When asked what could lie ahead, he continued: “I don’t know. We don’t know if it’s the end, do we? That’s not something I can discuss now. I don’t know. I don’t know what the future holds. It’s been a long 12 years with some really good moments, some terrible moments as well. This is just another moment. I’m not thinking too much of it right now. I’m just in the moment and let’s see where it takes us.”
