Middlesbrough and Norwich City want deal for former Hartlepool United loan signing

The latest transfer talk as a former Hartlepool United loan signing is linked with Middlesbrough and Norwich City.

Middlesbrough are reportedly considering a move for a former Hartlepool United loan signing - but will face competition from Championship rivals Norwich City.

Boro are currently preparing for the summer transfer window as they look to move on from their Championship play-off final defeat against Hull City - and there is a determination to ensure Kim Hellberg’s squad is strengthened to ensure they are in the mix for Premier League promotion once again when the new season gets underway in August.

Much of the talk in the aftermath of their Wembley defeat against the Tigers has surrounded the future of Boro captain Hayden Hackney as he continues to draw attention from clubs in the top flight. However, Football Insider have now reported Boro and second tier rivals Norwich City are looking to add to their squad by making a move for Huddersfield Town teenager Jay Smith-Sway.

The 19-year-old joined Pools for the final month of last season and went on to make five appearances under former manager Nicky Featherstone - although only one came as part of the starting eleven after the Terriers youngster was named at right-back in a 3-1 defeat against Boston United.

Speaking after completing a temporary switch to the Prestige Group Stadium, Smith-Sway said: “I’m pleased to be here. As soon as I heard about the chance to come in, it was one I wanted to take straight away. I had positive conversations with the manager and it was clear how much he wanted to bring me in and where I fit into the way the team wants to play. That gave me real confidence in the move. At this stage of my career, getting regular senior minutes is important, and I see this as a great opportunity to take my game forward.”

Smith-Sway has now returned to Huddersfield and the report has claimed the versatile full-back is still waiting for talks to take place over a new deal with the League One club. That situation has led to strong interest from Norwich and Boro are are said to be hoping to secure his signature ‘before sending him out on loan to continue to develop’ next season.
