The Leicester City centre-back made a loan switch to Ashton Gate on transfer deadline day following interest from Boro and other Championship clubs.

Derby County and SPL champions Celtic were also linked with the 22-year-old, yet Benkovic chose to join the Robins instead.

“I found out about interest from Bristol City a few weeks ago and I was really excited about that option," Benkovic told Bristol Live.

“Deadline day is always a bit stressful but I tried to stay calm because sometimes you can’t let the facts affect you.

“it was a long day, I can say that, but everything was sorted and now I'm here and I'm really grateful for the opportunity to play here because the club has the opportunity to do something big. I’ll work hard every day.”

Bristol City are sixth in the Championship and just five points off the automatic promotion places after four consecutive wins.

“It’s a new challenge,” added Benkovic. ”I know Bristol City is a really big club and they have big goals for this season, to get promoted to the Premier League. I can’t wait to start.

“It won’t be easy. The Championship is always interesting, that’s why everyone loves the Championship. I love challenges and that keeps me motivated.”

Despite their links with Benkovic, Boro brought in centre-back Harold Moukoudi on loan from French side Saint Etienne instead.
