What Neil Warnock said about West Brom striker Kenneth Zohore plus latest on ex-Arsenal forward Yaya Sanogo and Charlton's Dillon Phillips

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has heaped praise on West Brom striker Kenneth Zohore following reports that Boro are interested in taking the forward on loan.

The 26-year-old frontman helped Warnock’s Cardiff side win promotion from the Championship in 2018 and joined West Brom for a reported £8million last summer.

Warnock said on Thursday he still wants to sign a couple more strikers this summer to challenge Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher at the Riverside.

When asked about Zohore by the Mail, Warnock said “He’s a good player. We did ever so well with him. When I turned up at Cardiff, they wanted me to get rid of him and give him a free transfer.

“I think everyone knows that he played two-thirds of a season for me, and was outstanding and helped us get promoted. Now, he’s got a very lucrative contract in the Premier League I would imagine, with West Brom, and good luck to him.”

Boro have been in talks with former Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo, yet Warnock says he isn’t getting carried away after missing out on former targets Kieffer Moore, Joe Williams and Charlie Goode.

At the other end of the pitch, Charlton boss Lee Bowyer claimed the Addicks rejected a bid from Boro for goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, yet Warnock says that may have been misinterpreted.

"I saw that, I think you’re a little bit misinformed on that really,” said Warnock when asked about Phillips.

"I spoke to Steve Gallen at Charlton (director of football) about somebody else and they mentioned the goalkeeper not me.

"They might not have told you the whole story yet, there are that many people behind the scenes there you don’t know who’s telling who.”

Warnock is still hopeful he can make another signing next week ahead of Boro’s Championship opener against Watford on Friday, September 11.

"I’ve missed out on a few but I’m not really worried,” Warnock added. “If I miss out on a player because they go somewhere else I always think it’s their loss.

“We’re still looking for players. I’m optimistic we might get one next week.”
