Hartlepool United returned to the top three in the National League with a 3-1 win at Aldershot Town on Saturday afternoon.

After a goalless first half, goals from Luke Armstrong, Rhys Oates and a Nicky Featherstone penalty helped secure a fairly comfortable away win for Pools.

Mo Bettamer caused a late scare from the penalty spot but Pools were able to bounce back and secure victory to guarantee a play-off place.

Last time out: Hartlepool 2-4 Maidenhead United

Pools suffered their first home defeat in over five months last weekend as 10-man Maidenhead United claimed a 4-2 win to effectively end their title hopes.

A highlight of an otherwise poor day at the office for Pools was Rhys Oates’ goal of the season contender.

The last meeting: Hartlepool 2-1 Aldershot

Goals from Nicky Featherstone and Gavan Holohan either side of Craig Tanner’s equaliser saw Hartlepool United claim their first ever opening day win in the National League back in October 2020.

The Pools boss said ahead of today’s match: “It’s easy to say, and the reality of their league position would suggest they’ve not got a great deal to play for.

“But from the players’ perspective, I imagine the majority of if not all of them are out of contract in the summer and looking to secure contracts for next season.

“For the ones who have got a contract for next year then maybe you could say they haven’t got a great deal to play for but I certainly think there will be a lot who will be looking to get their futures secured in what could be an uncertain market during the summer with lots of players out of contract.

“It is an uncertain time and the players will want to make sure they’re putting in a performance that earns them a contract either at Aldershot or elsewhere.

“You can see that from the results they’ve had because they’ve had a pick up in terms of their results. From a personal pride perspective, they’ll want to finish as high up as they can and winning games at the end of the season can make a big difference.”
