Dave Challinor believes his Hartlepool United players are starting to reap the rewards from some intense training sessions.

The Pools boss has been pushing his side on the training ground since taking charge with the Tuesday morning sessions proving to be particularly demanding of the players.

But Challinor’s methods are far more meticulous than simply pushing the players to their limit as elements such as fatigue and workload management are considered when conducting the sessions.

“What we do [in training], it’s not a case of hammering them for the sake of hammering them, it’s all based around the GPS and data we have,” he said.

“We always try and do things safely and, without going into too much detail, we have acute chronic ratios and we just want to increase what the players can tolerate in terms of how much high-intensity work and sprinting they do during the week.

“It’s not a case of getting the lads out there and battering them as much as we can, it’s about allowing them to experience what we want them to on a matchday and giving them the confidence to go and do it by knowing that their bodies can handle it.

“The pleasing thing is that they’ve shown that they can do it.

“It’s allowing that to be translated on a Saturday afternoon and we’re seeing signs of that now which is a massive positive.

“It’s about them improving not only here but for their careers moving forward.”
