Hartlepool manager Dave Challinor hit out at the referee’s decision following the match and was disappointed but ‘not surprised’ to see the sending off upheld.

“We appealed Timi’s red card, that appeal was [rejected] so he serves a one-match ban,” Challinor confirmed.

"We can have gripes and moan about it but there’s nothing we can do as we lose a player for a game.

“We've not received the reasons why it wasn’t overturned but I can imagine what they’ll be. They’ll look at videos and go, in their eyes, forget that the referee misses the foul initially and it should be a free-kick to us, you can say it’s the denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

"My argument would be the incident takes place over 40-yards from goal and the player is running toward the touchline away from goal. Even if he does get in, he’s on his wrong foot and he’s in a footrace with Timi.

For me, there are too many factors that make it not a clear goalscoring opportunity. I’m not surprised with it which is me being cynical but it’s cost us or significantly impacted our ability to get something from a game of football.”
