Monk’s spell on Teesside was remembered for several big-money signings in the summer of 2017 as the club’s transfer strategy backfired significantly. But what has happened to the players who joined Boro during that spell? How many have actually been a success? Scroll down and flick through our picture gallery to see the full list and make your mind up:
5. Darren Randolph
After earning Boro's Player of the Year award last season, the Republic of Ireland shot-stopper rejoined Premier League side West Ham in January. Randolph played three times for the Hammers before the season was suspended and has been second choice behind Lukasz Fabianski. Photo: Getty Images
6. Ashley Fletcher
At the start of his Boro career, it seemed Fletcher was weighed down by the £6.5million fee which the Teessiders paid West Ham for his services. After a difficult loan spell at Sunderland, Fletcher remained on the fringes at the Riverside but has now become a first-team regular. With ten league goals, he is the club's top scorer this campaign. Photo: Alex Livesey
7. George Miller
A highly-rated prospect, Miller signed for the Teessiders as a teenager for a decent fee from Bury. The striker didn't play a single game for Boro’s first team, though, and was sold to Barnsley, then of League One, in January 2019. Since then, Miller has been loaned out to Bradford and Scunthorpe but has struggled for goals. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
8. Ryan Shotton
Shotton’s versatility has proved useful at Boro, especially under Tony Pulis who regularly picked the experienced defender. The 31-year-old has also put in some decent performances this season, too, despite an injury-hit campaign. Shotton is one of seven players who will see their Boro contract expire this summer.
